Habitat and Description
I. Habitat of the plant:
Cassia Fistula, commonly known as purging cassia or Indian laburnum, is a flowering plant native to India, and spread from eastward throughout India to Myanmar and Thailand and south to Sri Lanka and southern Pakistan, and could handle an altitude of up to 1220 m near the Himalayas. It can both be natural and cultivated. Purging cassia is frost tender and needs plenty of sunlight. It prefers well-drained and moist soil but can also grow well in sandy, loam, or clay soils. It can also tolerate strong winds and droughts. 
II. Description of the plant:
Purging cassia is a deciduous, medium-sized plant with a slender trunk and small buttresses. The bark is gray and smooth, and the leaves are green and wedge-shaped at the base. The flowers bloom in late spring, and is shown to be bright yellow, each flower with 5 identical petals. The fruit is long, thin, and brownish-black, and contains seeds and a strong odor.

III. Culture value of the plant:
Purging cassia is the national flower and tree of Thailand, and symbolize Thai royalty. The flowers are of ritual importance in the Vishu festival of Kerala, and the tree was depicted on a 20-rupee stamp. Its flower is also the state flower of Kerala. In addition, people in Laos use the flowers as offerings at the temple and hang them in their houses at Laos New Year for good luck and happiness.
IV. Uses:
The plant is valued for its beautiful flowers, medicinal properties, and fast growth rate. In India, the flowers are sometimes eaten and the leaves have been used to supplement the diets of cattle, sheep, and goats.
The pulp is a safe purgative and is recommended for children and pregnant women. It had been used in herbal medicine for quite a long time, and is also an ingredient in some mass-produced herbal laxatives.
Additional uses include shading and decoration.
